Fix an overexposed photo

Washed-out colours, a white sky, a face that shines too much. Drop the photo and Loupe brings the bright parts back down to where you can see them.

Your photo never leaves your device. JPEG, HEIC, PNG, WebP, or camera RAW on a computer, up to 200MB.

Overexposed photos come in two kinds, and it helps to know which you have. In most, the bright parts are only too bright: the detail is still there, squeezed up near white. In some, parts have gone completely white, and there’s nothing left in them to find.

What it does to your photo

First it measures how much of the frame is close to white, and where. Then it lowers the exposure a little and pulls the highlights down hard. For a bright sky, it often darkens the top of the frame on its own, with a gradient that fades out toward the horizon, the way a photographer would use a graduated filter. Colours that looked washed out usually return with a touch more contrast.

Things you can say next

  • “Bring the clouds back.”
  • “Her face is too shiny. Tone it down.”
  • “Less washed out, more colour.”

Pure white can’t come back

If the sky in a JPG or phone photo has turned completely white, no editor can find the clouds that were there. Darkening it only makes it grey. What Loupe can do is let the rest of the photo carry the picture, so the white reads as bright light rather than a mistake.

RAW files are another story. They keep detail above what the JPG shows, so a sky that looks lost often isn’t. If you shot RAW, open that file instead.

Can it bring back a completely white sky?

Not from a JPG or phone photo. Once the sky has gone pure white there is nothing left in it to recover. A RAW file is different, and often has more there than you can see.

Is it free?

Your first edit needs no account at all. After that, a free account gets ten AI edits a month, and every slider in the editor is free to use by hand.

Will it change faces?

No. Loupe only changes light and colour, never the shape of anything, so people look exactly like themselves.

Does my photo get uploaded?

The photo stays in your browser. To see what it’s working with, the assistant gets a small preview, at most 512 pixels across, which is not stored.
