Canon moved from CR2 to CR3 in 2018, starting with the EOS M50, and every EOS R body uses it. Software that predates the change cannot read it. Lightroom 6, the last version you could buy outright rather than rent, is one of them, which is how a lot of people find out their editor no longer opens their own photos.

Your other options, fairly

  • Canon Digital Photo Professional is free, made by Canon, and reproduces Canon’s picture styles exactly. It is a desktop install, and the interface is its own thing.
  • Windows Photos can show CR3 files once you add Microsoft’s Raw Image Extension. It views them; it does not really develop them.
  • Lightroom and Photoshop open CR3 on a current Adobe subscription.

Loupe is for when you want to edit a few files properly without installing or paying for anything first.

What opening one here looks like

A 20-megapixel CR3 from an EOS R6 opens in about a second on our test machine and exports at full size in about four and a half. The brightness and contrast are matched to the JPEG preview your camera embedded in the file, so if you shot with exposure compensation, or with a contrasty picture style, it opens that way. The picture style’s colour is not reproduced; colour starts neutral, from the white balance you shot with.

From there it is an ordinary RAW develop: exposure on the linear data, highlights that recover rather than grey out, shadows, white balance, curves, colour mixing, masks for the sky or a face. Or type what you want (“bring back the sky”, “less orange on the skin”) and the assistant moves the same sliders and says why.

What it does not do yet

  • Computer only; a phone browser does not get enough memory for a full-size RAW.
  • Exports JPEG, PNG or WebP, not DNG or TIFF, and without the camera’s EXIF data for now.
  • No lens profile corrections for Canon RF or EF lenses yet.
