Why an ARW won’t open

ARW is Sony’s RAW format, the sensor’s data before the camera made a picture of it. Plenty of apps, websites and print services can’t read it, and it’s large too: a single file from a high-resolution Alpha can run past 60MB.

What the JPG will look like

Brightness and contrast are matched to the JPG your camera would have made, so exposure compensation you dialled in carries through. The colour starts neutral rather than from your Creative Look or Creative Style, so a look you set in the camera won’t come across.

If you’d like to change the light or colour first, every file can go straight into the editor from here.

Sony’s own option

Imaging Edge Desktop is free from Sony, if you don’t mind installing it. This page is for when you just need a few JPGs now.

Which Sony cameras work?

Our test file is from a ZV-E10 II, and the decoder reads ARW from Sony’s Alpha and ZV cameras, plus the older SRF and SR2 files. If a file won’t open, you’ll see which one and why.

Is it the full resolution?

Yes. It develops the sensor data itself, not the small preview tucked inside the file, so a 26-megapixel ARW gives you a 26-megapixel JPG.

Does it work on my phone?

Not for RAW files. Developing one at full size needs more memory than a phone browser is given, so use a computer.

How long does it take?

About three seconds for a 26-megapixel file on our test machine. Larger files and older computers take a little longer.
