Convert Nikon NEF to JPG
Drop your Nikon RAW files and get full-size JPGs back. They’re developed on your computer, not uploaded, and there’s nothing to install.
On a computer, up to 200MB a file. Nothing is uploaded.
Why a NEF won’t open
NEF is Nikon’s RAW format: what the sensor recorded, before the camera turned it into a picture. Your computer may show a preview, but many apps, websites and print services can’t open the file itself, and each new Nikon body brings a variation that older software hasn’t heard of.
What the JPG will look like
Brightness and contrast are matched to the JPG your camera would have made, so exposure compensation you dialled in carries through. The colour starts neutral rather than from your Picture Control, so a Vivid or Monochrome setting won’t come across.
If you’d like to change the light or colour first, every file can go straight into the editor from here.
Nikon’s own option
NX Studio is free from Nikon and reproduces Picture Controls exactly, if you don’t mind installing it. This page is for when you just need a few JPGs now.
Which Nikon cameras work?
Our test file is from a Z fc, and the decoder reads NEF from Nikon’s DSLRs and Z cameras, plus NRW from Coolpix compacts. If a file won’t open, you’ll see which one and why.
Is it the full resolution?
Yes. It develops the sensor data itself, not the small preview tucked inside the file, so a 24-megapixel NEF gives you a 24-megapixel JPG.
Does it work on my phone?
Not for RAW files. Developing one at full size needs more memory than a phone browser is given, so use a computer.
How long does it take?
About three seconds for a 21-megapixel file on our test machine. Larger files and older computers take a little longer.
