Where DNG files come from

DNG is Adobe’s open RAW format, and it turns up in more places than people expect. iPhones save ProRAW as DNG, many Android phones do the same in their pro modes, Leica and Pentax use it in some cameras, and Adobe’s free converter turns other RAW files into it.

What they have in common is size and stubbornness. A 48-megapixel ProRAW can be 75MB, and most apps outside photo editors won’t open one at all.

What the JPG will look like

Brightness and contrast are matched to the preview stored in the file, so it should look close to what you saw when you took it. The one exception is the iPhone, whose own processing lifts different parts of the frame separately. That can’t be copied exactly, so its JPGs can come out slightly flatter than the photo in your camera roll.

On a Mac?

Preview can open a DNG and export it as a JPG too. This page does the same on Windows and Chromebooks, with nothing to install.

Does it work with iPhone ProRAW?

Yes, that’s one of our test files. Bring the DNG over to a computer first, since RAW files need more memory than a phone browser is given.

Is it the full resolution?

Yes. It develops the sensor data itself, not the small preview stored in the file, so the JPG has every pixel the DNG has.

Why does my iPhone photo look a bit flatter?

Your iPhone brightens shadows and tames skies in different parts of the frame separately. A RAW develop can’t copy that exactly, so the JPG can look a touch flatter. A few seconds in the editor brings it back.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The file is developed in your browser, on your own computer, and never leaves it.
