Make a photo black and white

Taking the colour out is easy. Making a black and white photo that actually looks good is the part most tools skip. Drop yours and Loupe does both.

Your photo never leaves your device. JPEG, HEIC, PNG, WebP, or camera RAW on a computer, up to 200MB.

Take the colour out of most photos and you get something grey and flat. A red jumper and a green hedge can be exactly as bright as each other, and without colour to tell them apart they melt into the same grey.

How a good conversion works

Film photographers solved this with coloured filters. A red one darkened blue skies so the clouds stood out, and a green one lifted the leaves. Loupe’s black and white mixer does the same job: it decides how light or dark each colour becomes in grey. Then it sets the contrast with a curve, so the blacks are properly black and the whites have a little glow.

Things you can say next

  • “Darker sky, like a red filter.”
  • “Softer, like an old print.”
  • “Add some grain.”
  • “Moodier, but keep her face bright.”
Can I add film grain?

Yes. Ask for it, or use the Grain slider under Effects.

Do I lose the colour version?

No. Black and white is a setting on top of your original, so you can switch back to colour at any point, or export one of each.

Is it free?

Your first edit needs no account at all. After that, a free account gets ten AI edits a month, and every slider in the editor is free to use by hand.

Will it change faces?

No. Loupe only changes light and colour, never the shape of anything, so people look exactly like themselves.

Does my photo get uploaded?

The photo stays in your browser. To see what it’s working with, the assistant gets a small preview, at most 512 pixels across, which is not stored.
